The man who has eaten at 6,300 different Chinese restaurants across America

A Chinese food lover has eaten at 6,300 different restaurants and travelled across America feeding his obsession with Oriental cuisine. But despite eating Chinese food all his life, David Chan still cannot use chopsticks. Mr Chan's quest began in earnest after college when he tried to eat at every Chinese restaurant in his home city of Los Angeles. His passion for the cuisine has since taken him to 50 states. The 64-year-old accountant has charted every meal on an Excel spreadsheet and over the past 58 years, Mr Chan has tried a new Chinese restaurant on average every three days. His incredible feat is even more remarkable as Mr Chan hated Chinese food when he was a child. The third-generation Asian-American preferred spaghetti or meatloaf until he discovered the joys of Chinese food when he was at college. Such is Mr Chan’s expertise on Chinese food that restaurant critics often ask him for suggestions on good places to try and he has also written about the country’s cuisine and history. He said that he discovered Chinese food as a way of connecting with his culture. When he got his first job, Mr Chan befriended a group of colleagues from Hong Kong and they set out on trying every restaurant they could find. Mr Chan told The Los Angeles Times: 'I've always been a collector. I collected stamps and records.'However, his love of Chinese food did not stem from childhood. Koi Palace topped topped the list as Mr Chan praised it for its continuing excellence Mr Chan has travelled around the U.S. sampling traditional and American-Chinese fusion food (file picture) MR CHAN'S TOP 10 RESTAURANTS 1) Koi Palace, Daly City, California: Mr Chan praised it for continuing excellence2) Sea Harbour, Rosemead, California: He said it brought 'high quality dim sum' to the area3) Elite Restaurant, Montery Park, California: Praised for its interesting range of dim sum 4) King Hua, Alhambra, California: Mr Chan said it has similar dim sum to Sea Harbour 5) Lunasia, Alhambra, California: The expert said it has an 'innovative' menu such as foie gras dim sum 6) Din Tai Fung, Arcadia, California: The only Shanghai style restaurant in the top 10 7) Yank Sing, San Francisco, California: Mr Chan praised the dim sum specialist for 'evolving' 8) Seafood Village, Monterey Park, California: The Hong Kong-style restaurant is 'highly regarded' 9) 101 Noodle Express, Alhambra, California: Mr Chan said the restaurant's star dish the Shandong beef roll has given it prominence 10) Jai Yun, San Francisco, California: Mr Chan said it is one of the 'quirkiest' Chinese restaurants in the U.S. He said he was brought up as an American by his parents who wanted to ‘protect’ him from discrimination. When he was younger the only Chinese restaurants were in Chinatown and in 1950 he was one of just 8,067 Chinese people living in Los Angeles. Mr Chan told the Los Angeles Times: ‘Unless you lived in San Francisco, you were an oddity.’Chinese immigration became more prevalent when he was studying at UCLA after the government relaxed laws that had only allowed 105 people each year to move from China to the U.S. It was during his college years that Mr Chan began to connect with Chinese culture and took a course called Orientals in America. Mr Chan said he one of the favorite parts of his hobby is seeing how the cuisine has evolved over the decades. He says he finds American-Chinese fusions - such as the Chow Mein sandwich served with gravy that he found in New England - as interesting and enjoyable as traditional Chinese food. While there is only one restaurant that he returns to, ABC Seafood, Mr Chan said the current number one Chinese restaurant is Koi Palace in Daly City, California, where they specialise in dim sum at lunch and Hong Kong-style seafood at dinner. Mr Chan's son Eric believes his father's obsessions stems from him being a natural collector. He said: 'If you collect enough of something, you can capture its essence. Maybe that's what he's trying to do with food.'

DFM Mock NFL Draft Analysis: Best Players Available

By ANDREW CHAMPAGNEachampagne@saratogian.comTwitter.com/AndrewChampagneEarlier this afternoon, I took part in a Digital First Media mock NFL Draft, along with writers from around the country. It was a ton of fun, and thanks to everyone who took some time to check it out Wednesday. In case you missed it, you can check out the way everything unfolded here. There are some top prospects that didn’t get picked by any of our writers, and this will serve as a way to break them down.Quarterback: EveryoneYep, not one team wound up using a first-rounder on a quarterback. I had command of the Bills and the Jets and was certainly tempted to take Geno Smith, but the Bills are way more likely to use a later selection on Ryan Nassib and the Jets had needs elsewhere.Obviously, trades we hadn’t foreseen will play a huge role in the draft. Still, you have to think the Jaguars, who hold the first pick of the third round, will be licking their chops for a chance at Geno if this plays out this way.Running back: Giovani Bernard, North CarolinaI’m a huge Bernard fan. He’s got some amazing game tape, and his stats bear that out. He’s a guy who grabs chunks of yardage at a time, can catch out of the backfield, and return kicks if needed. He’s a little small, and that hurts his status considerably. However, he’s a great value in the second round, especially for teams looking for depth at running back or a guy that can fill a committee.Wide receiver: Terrance Williams, Baylor97 catches doesn’t mean what it used to anymore, apparently. Williams made a ton of big plays at Baylor last year, and in 2011, he was RG3’s primary receiving option on his way to a Heisman Trophy.Wide receiver is a very deep position this year, and we had four wideouts (and a tight end) taken off the board in the first round. However, Williams may be one of the most NFL-ready players in the draft. He’s not a #1 receiver, but he could shine in the right system as a possession guy.Offensive line: Menelik Watson, Florida StateThe Seminoles saw three players from last year’s team get taken in the first round, and Watson and E.J. Manuel could both sneak into it as well. Watson is a very interesting case, as he actually played Division I basketball at Marist College before transferring to a junior college and then to Florida State.Watson’s been rising up draft boards, and apparently aced pre-draft interviews with several teams in need of offensive tackles. Currently, I have him mocked early in the second round to Detroit, but he could wind up getting a call much earlier than that.Defensive line: Margus Hunt, SMUHunt is one of the most intriguing athletes in the entire draft. He’s very inexperienced, but took over games at times, most notably in SMU’s bowl game. Depending on the scheme of the team he goes to, he can play either defensive end or defensive tackle. He may be a project, but he’ll either be a late-first or early-second round pick.Linebackers: Alex Okafor, Texas; Kevin Minter, LSUI like both of these guys a lot. Okafor is a low-risk player with a high motor who doesn’t take plays off. He dominated at both the Alamo Bowl and Senior Bowl, and there’s an outside chance he sneaks into the first round. I think he’d be a great fit for Denver at #28, but there are other options available who would be as well.Meanwhile, Minter is an old-school, run-stopping linebacker, which means he may not fit for a lot of teams who are geared more towards stopping the pass. However, what he does, he does well, and he may very well wind up in Baltimore as the replacement for Ray Lewis.Defensive back: Jamar Taylor, Boise StateA fast-rising corner, Taylor shined at the Combine, displaying a ton of speed. He’s in play at the back end of the first round, for sure, as you can never have too many talented corners in this pass-happy era of football.I’ll be live-tweeting the NFL Draft from my personal account tomorrow night. Follow me at @AndrewChampagne for analysis and grades of every first-round pick.

Justin Brown is Confident He Will Play in the NFL

Justin Brown felt like his resume merited an invite to February's NFL Combine, but one never came. Brown also believes his size and skills are valuable enough to make him worth a draft selection later this week. Most signs, though, indicate the 6-foot-3, 207-pound receiver will probably end up an undrafted free agent.“A little disappointed, but at the end of the day, there was really nothing else I could do,” Brown said last month at OU's Pro Day when asked about the combine. “I did my best on the field, but at the end of the day, I don't make the decisions. That's why I had to work hard and try to prove myself at pro day.” Comment »

Bless the Team That Drafts Manti Te'o

Getty ImagesThis is it. After months and months of waiting, the NFL Draft begins tonight.I've been blogging on this since late last year, and I do not regret a single day of it. I am fully aware of the odds against the Rams drafting Manti Te'o at all, let alone tonight in New York. I am aware that teams like the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, and others are more likely to draft him, maybe in the second round. I'm definitely aware of Rams fans that have commented discontent towards the idea of any Rams fan wanting Te'o in St. Louis. I would be foolish of me to not acknowledge the reality that the NFL Draft is unpredictable and most times advocacy for any single player by any NFL fan does not work. However, because the NFL is unpredictable, it is the reason why I do not regret this.I'm one of those people that believes that doing nothing is far worse than getting it wrong in my advocacy for Manti Te'o being a Ram. I know that there is only a remote chance of the Rams even thinking about Manti Te'o. But listening to naysayers and letting negative individuals dominate the conversation on who should be drafted by Jeff Fisher's team would be a monumental mistake that I would regret for life. I rather be wrong supporting a player I want in my favorite team than to be silent to appease negative critics here in St. Louis, and anywhere else. Most of us don't bother to publicly advocate for any players, and some that do give up after a few tries when facing rude comments by online strangers. For these reasons, I am proud of my advocacy of Manti Te'o as a Rams fan and have no regrets. So, if a team other than the Rams draft Manti Te'o, then that franchise deserves the blessing(s) of Te'o and his contributions he will provide. It takes character and an understanding of true potential to see value in Te'o's gift as a player, and the team that drafts deserves success in the upcoming season. This is why I want the Rams to draft him, but I know that it's not a guarantee, yet in knowing that I have to speak up while the opportunity exists. Silence is worse than failure. So if any other team drafts Te'o, I will accept it and move on.Now if the Rams draft Manti Te'o....well, the 'big man upstairs' will be getting all the credit.
