PH students recognized at Russia’s science research contestPrintEmail:Published : Sunday, April 21, 2013 00:00Article Views : 44A three-member delegation from the Philippine Science High School received recognition from the XX Vernadsky National Contest of Student Research Projects in Moscow.PSHS students Quinito Miguel Baula and Anthony Ivan Geronimo were cited for their entries under the earth sciences and medical science and healthcare categories, respectively.This was the Philippines’ maiden participation in the said competition.Geronimo was given the Diploma of the 1st Degree for his work “Analysis of Sulfated Polysaccharides from Guso (Kappaphycus alvarezii) Seaweed for Anticoagulant Activity” as the best project in pharmacology, biotechnology and food chemistry. He was also nominated for Audience’s Choice Award.A certificate of recognition was likewise awarded to  Baula for being nominated for the best project in the earth sciences for his study on the “Oceanographic and Environment Variations in the Sibuyan Sea during the Holocene based on Foraminifera Assemblage. “The students were led by their research adviser, Ms. Ana Victoria Lloren, and were accompanied by one parent, Mr. Allan Geronimo.In a show of support and national pride, Philippine Ambassador to Russia Alejandro B. Mosquera, together with three other officers of the Embassy, joined the Philippine delegation at the closing ceremony of the contest and hosted a celebratory dinner in honor of the delegation.The Vernadsky National Contest of Student Research Projects is one of the oldest and largest scientific competitions in Russia bringing together young researchers and cultivating their skills in the conduct of scientific research and investigation.For the first time in its 20 years of existence, the organizers invited foreign participants to the contest.Aside from the Philippines, the Czech Republic, India, Iran, Mexico and Slovakia were also represented.      Cristina Lee-Pisco
