Yankees Take Rubber Game in Colorado

newyork.yankees.mlb.comBy Nick Ziegler (@Ziggy26x)May 9th, 2013New York Yankees vs. Colorado Rockies Post Game RecapFinal Score: Yankees 3 Rockies 1The New York Yankees were able to finish up their series in Colorado on a high-note by taking the rubber game of the three game series. The win moves the Yankees into first place in the AL East with a (20-13) record, which is a few percentage points ahead of the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles.C.C Sabathia got the start for the Yankees, but due to a lengthy rain delay of two hours Sabathia’s start was cut short. He ended up going four innings allowing only one run on one hit, and a walk. Sabathia did look good in his four innings of work, but the velocity is still a big question, as his fastball only topped out at 91 MPH.Adam Warren was the first of many Yankees out of the bullpen after the rain delay, and with a solid 1.2 innings of work, Warren earned his first win of the season. Thing got a bit interesting when Preston Claiborne came in the game, as he allowed three hits in just .2 innings of work before David Robertson came in to close out the seventh. Robertson went on to pitch a scoreless eighth inning before Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth to earn his 13th save of the season. The Yankees are sure getting their moneys worth out of Rivera in what will be his final season. In a great hitters park like Coors Field, the Yankees did struggle to hit in large part to having most of their projected starting lineup on the disabled list, but they have found ways to score enough runs to win the series none the less. Vernon Wells got the Yankees on the board in the first inning with a base hit that scored Jayson Nix, as for Wells it was his 16th RBI of the season, and he went two for four on Thursday afternoon.Robinson Cano had a big milestone day in the win, as he was able to get his 1500th career hit with an infield single in the third inning, and then after the rain delay hit a solo-homerun in the fifth inning, which was his ninth homerun of the season. Cano’s homerun was his 186th of his career, which put him past Yankee great Paul O’Neill for 17th on the Yankees all-time homerun list. The Yankees road-trip will continue on Friday in Kansas City against the Royals, as Phil Hughes (1-2, 3.60) will look to keep up his great pitching of late against Wade Davis (2-2, 4.75).
